What is the Kersey Transportation Safety Action Plan?

Nationwide, there is a movement towards “Vision Zero” – striving for a time when no one dies while using the roadway system. Kersey successfully applied for a federal grant within the Vision Zero framework to fund a project called a Safety Action Plan. As a result, this project is fully funded through the following grants:

  • $120,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)
  • $30,000 from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA)

The Safety Action Plan will be a proactive, data-driven effort to systematically identify existing and potential safety concerns on Kersey roads. The work includes:

  • Review and analysis of traffic crash records
  • Locations will be evaluated and prioritized for potential improvements
  • Programs and processes will be reviewed for a safety focus
  • Gathering of public input and comments
  • Detailed review of vulnerable road users (people on bicycles or pedestrians) safety

The Safety Action Plan will detail strategies for safety improvements, prioritize lists of potential infrastructure, recommend programs/policies, discuss education and enforcement efforts, and create a process for ongoing review on an annual basis. Completing the Plan will make Kersey eligible for additional federal funding to implement recommendations.

The goal is to create a data-driven Action Plan to make Kersey's transportation system safer and to fund improvements that prevent fatalities and serious injuries.

What Do We Know So Far?

Reported traffic crashes are completed by the Kersey Police Department and submitted to the state. That crash information is available for review and analysis. In the past year, total crashes were down. However, there is still work to be done - in the last three years there have been six serious injury and three fatal crashes within in the Town limits.

This data will be further reviewed, including an analysis at many intersections to identify crash types, trends, and locations that would be good candidates for improvement.
